This article focuses on aspects of the game that are not immediately obvious, or are rules and patterns that dictate and guide the behaviour of the game. For tricks - actions done by the player - see Category:Tricks.
Game Mechanics are the fundamental rules and priciples of Trackmania, these mechanics are very special to Trackmania because players have found some "accidental" mechanics such as Uberbugs, Nosebugs and Speedslides. These mechanics are the fundamentals of the game of how you can get to the finish as fast as possible. Of course you might not encounter a map that uses these accidental mechanics, but the simplest and most common mechanics are, airbrakes and drifts.
Vehicle Terrain Detection
The left front wheel is what the game looks at to decide what surface the car is driving on, or the car’s terrain properties. For example, if the left wheels are on Road (tarmac), and the right wheels on Grass, the car will have Road acceleration.
Air has Road acceleration, which rarely comes into play since ground contact is necessary to accelerate. However, this means if the right wheels are on Dirt or Grass, and the left wheels are above the ground, the car will have Road acceleration.
