In Trackmania, there are several surfaces that the player may drive on. These include Road (a.k.a. Asphalt, Tarmac or Platform), Dirt, Grass, Ice (which differs across games and environments), Penalty Surfaces (Sand/Penalty Dirt, Penalty Grass, Snow/Penalty Ice), Plastic, Wood, Underwater. Below is a summary of some of these surfaces:

Road

  • Maximum speed: 1000km/h

With full steering with the Stadium car, slide outs occur at speeds above ~598km/h. Sliding may occur if brake is pressed while steering at speeds above ~191km/h. Generally this is a grippy surface.

In TMNF there is rammbugs on the road, if you land on them it can trigger a landing bug

Dirt

  • Maximum speed: ?km/h

This surface is less grippy than road. When steering sharply, the car will begin to slide on its own above the first gear. Sliding with smaller angles tends to increase the RPM of the car, causing gear shifts to occur earlier.

In TMNF this was notoriously prone to landing bugs.

Grass

  • Maximum speed:
    • TMNF: 500km/h;
    • TM2020: 800km/h

Similar to dirt but even less grippy, and with slower acceleration.
