During a gear shift, the car will momentarily stop accelerating. Sliding during a gear shift is usually detrimental because it extends the period of time for which the car does not accelerate. A useful audio cue for this is the pitch of the car engine - it gets higher as the next gear up approaches, spikes during the gear shift, then goes back down in the new gear. The “decreasing” phase of the pitch will be noticeably longer for bad gear ups.

Gears are a fundamental concept of Trackmania. They greatly affect the optimal lines on a map, mainly due to gear shifts.

For the Stadium car, there are 5 main gears:

  • Gear 1: 0-100km/h
  • Gear 2: 100-161km/h
  • Gear 3: 161-235km/h
  • Gear 4: 235-341km/h
  • Gear 5: 341km/h+
  • Reverse Gear.

It is worth noting that while acceleration force does decrease as speed increases, this is not related to the gears, but rather preset speed values.
